NEW YORK POST

“Not for nothing is the Sydney Dance Company regarded as the best that Australia has to offer in regard to tanztheater”
AACHENER ZEITUNG [COLOGNE GERMANY]
Overview

Sydney Dance Company is Australia's premier contemporary dance company and one  of the country's most original and vibrant arts organisations. During the years 1976 –  2007 the Company was led by Graeme Murphy and Janet Vernon, two of Australia's  most celebrated and admired artists.  In 2008 Sydney Dance Company will present three world premieres from  internationally significant guest choreographers Meryl Tankard, Rafael Bonachela and  Aszure Barton. These invitations to create new works will add to a repertoire already  acclaimed for its vivid theatricality and inventive choreography.    Performing each year nationally and internationally, Sydney Dance Company has  become one of the most in demand performing arts companies in Australia and an  active proponent of Australian culture around the world. The Company has undertaken  over 25 international tours – to Asia, North America, South America and Europe – and  has performed to audiences in over 100 cities in over 20 countries.

Sydney Dance Company's eighteen dancers are acclaimed throughout the world for  their technical finesse and artistry. The dancer-choreographer exchange is a crucial  partnership in the creation of each new work, and their dedication is evident in the  exuberance with which they perform.   As part of its ongoing commitment to developing audiences for contemporary dance,  Sydney Dance Company has showcased the works of international dance companies  and of Australian and international choreographers. Guest choreographers have  included Gideon Obarzanek, Ian Spink, Graeme Watson, Paul Mecurio, Don Asker,  Louis Falco, Ohad Naharin, Ralph Lemon, Douglas Wright and Stephen Petronio to  name only a few. International companies presented by Sydney Dance Company  include Compagnie Maguy Marin, Ballet Preljocaj, The Parsons Dance Company and  Momix. Sydney Dance Company is also committed to choreographic development  through the 2008 Overture Series Initiative, and the regular programming of  choreographic workshops into its busy performance calendar.

Background

Sydney Dance Company has its origins in a company founded in 1969 by dancer  Suzanne Musitz. In the early 1970s, the organisation came of age as The Dance  Company (NSW) and began to receive annual government funding along with a  notable growth in stature and public support. In 1975-1976 the Company was directed  by Dutch choreographer Jaap Flier, before the appointment of Australian  choreographer Graeme Murphy in November 1976. In 1979 Murphy and Vernon  instituted the defining name change to Sydney Dance Company.   Sydney Dance Company's headquarters are located at The Wharf, Pier 4, in Sydney's  busy arts precinct at Walsh Bay where other arts companies, such as Bangarra Dance  Theatre, Carnivale, Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and ATYP, are also located.  Sydney Dance Company gratefully acknowledges the support of the Australia Council,  the Federal Government's arts funding and advisory body, through the Major  Performing Arts Board; the New South Wales Government through the Ministry for the  Arts; and the invaluable support it receives from its sponsors, company supporters and  partners.
